May online winners announced

Well the waiting is over. The May on-line competition results are below. Phil Gledhill was the judge this month and he very promptly returned his decisions but convention has it that we let everyone “stew” for a few days before revealing the winners. Here are Phil’s words.

Well done to everyone that entered for providing a great variety of images.  This has certainly been challenging!

First Place:  Tulips – This looked impressive from the thumbnail and didn’t disappoint when opened.  The image is well thought out with a striking composition and good lighting.  Perfect as is and a worthy winner.

Second place:  Chocolate Liquor – Well composed with strong, vibrant colours.  I like the negative space at the top and don’t mind the reflection being cropped.  A bit more detail could be extracted from the shadows in the chocolates where areas are virtually pure black.

Third place:  Strawberry – Simple and elegant, my favourite fruit is set off nicely against the black background with subtle lighting.  Again I love the negative space but the strawberry is perhaps a touch too far to the right.  Shadows could be lifted slightly to enhance the reflection.

Special mention – My Last Rolo

I was immediately drawn to this amusing image but it really caused me problems weighing up artistic content against technical issues.  An original idea with the background and border enhancing the overall composition.  The message is a nice touch.  Lighting, probably direct flash, is very harsh resulting in blown highlights and blocked shadows.  For this reason it just missed out on third place but still put a smile on my face.

Phil

So there you have the decision so who entered the shots. Well done to Sarah Bindon with the winning Tulips, in second was Steve A Wood with Chocolate Liquor and third was Dianne Pitchford with Strawberry. The honourable mention/commendation was to Sally Sallett for My Last Rolo. Have a look at all the entrants here and see if you agree with Phil’s decision.

Don’t forget June’s subject is RIVERS and as usual the closing date is midnight on the 20th.
