Members' Showcase

This was the second of our varied showcase evenings, so following on from Peter Wells' 'Infrared' and Neil Scarlett’s 'Year by Subjects', we had even more, well… …variety!

Steve Wright gave us One Camera, One Lens, One Phone, Several Island’s which did exactly what it said on the tin.

Typically, frank and open, Steve explained how this trip along the Scottish West Coast, had been a self-imposed challenge, as the title reveals.

Admittedly, his one lens was a 24-200mm ffe zoom, which Steve said wasn’t really long enough to capture wildlife. It was enough though, to capture some great pictures which had many of us checking out booking sites. Steve took the time to explain how he’d composed the shots and didn’t shy away from showing images which he felt failed to hit the mark.

Steve’s smart phone was never far from his side and proved very useful to capture the evening light. Steve often said, ‘I like that shot’; enjoyment is what our hobby is about, and because Steve enjoyed his trip and the pictures he took, we enjoyed it too!

By contrast, Tracy, stayed close to home, very close in fact, with a talk about her Waterton Wall Project. Many of you will know that the club is involved in the wall’s bi-centenary celebrations in early May. Consequently, Tracy set about shooting the wall throughout the year.

Her talk included a fascinating history of the five-mile-long structure, built over four years. When living in Wakefield, I walked and cycled round the wall frequently without knowing much about it –  but thanks to Tracy, I do now!

Tracy’s Waterton Wall Project evolved over twelve months, with the aim of taking images each month from twenty-two vantage points.

The images show key parts of the wall, becoming a fascinating record of one element of Waterton’s legacy.

WallFest 26 features events throughout May, including Wakefield Camera Club's photo trails for both children and adults on Saturday 9th May. To find out more, please visit their excellent website:-

Huge thanks then, to Steve and Tracy for taking the time and trouble to share their very enjoyable projects. I for one, can’t wait until the next showcase.
